DNA genealogy tests are a relatively new service being offered to the public. Genealogy tests do not determine paternity and cannot identify if an individual may be prone to specific medical diseases or disorders. Their sole purpose is to give a person an idea of their genealogical background. As these DNA tests become more affordable they also gain popularity as many people are curious about their ethnic heritage, which they may have little or no knowledge of beyond two or three generations.

The samples are generally taken through a home DNA test. If you are considering paying a genetic genealogy lab to analyse your heritage, ask to see a sample report. Some companies present the results of DNA genealogy tests in a very scientific manner, which a majority of people will not find particularly user friendly or easy to understand. Unless you have a scientific background yourself, opt for a company which provides you with a report which presents its findings in both scientific terms and laymans terms, and tells you what the implications of your results are in regards to where your ancestors might originate from.
